Your electricity bill is the fastest way into your carbon footprint. You only need one line from it, and it isn't the amount you paid.
1. Find your kWh, not your RM
Look for your total consumption for the billing period, shown in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Ringgit amounts move with tariffs and surcharges. Kilowatt-hours are what actually drive emissions.
2. Collect twelve months
Footprints are usually reported per year. Gather 12 bills, or as many as you have, for every premises and meter. Watch for estimated readings and shared meters.
3. Apply a grid emission factor
Multiply your kWh by a grid emission factor: the kilograms of CO₂e produced per kWh on your grid. Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak have different grids, so their factors differ. Carbon Quanta applies the factor for you.
Got rooftop solar?
Solar you generate and use yourself reduces the electricity you buy, so your Scope 2 number goes down. Keep your solar generation records alongside your bills.
